Qualifier Champion Interview Week 4: Koma

Hello everyone,

This week I’ve had time to talk with Koma, winner of the 4th Invitational Qualifier.

I’ve asked him a few questions regarding his performance during this Constructed tournament.

Garuda – Congratulations on winning the IQ. You are now the fourth champion to win 100 packs, a rare sleeve and a trip as a qualifier for the 100k Invitational tournament, how are you feeling about this?

Koma – I am incredibly excited to be among the 12 players going to California! I am also the first American to get an invite! I was worried there for a bit that one of us ‘Muricans wouldn’t get in 🙂

G – Can you tell me about yourself and were you are from?

K – IGN is Koma. I am 33, which is ancient in the TCG world. I live in Oklahoma, am currently engaged to an unbelievable woman who allows me to play 10+ hour Hex tournaments and I have been a firefighter/paramedic for the past 6 years.

G – Can you tell me more about the Hex TCG scene that you are part of?

K – I am a part of a small group of guys on Skype that bounce some Hex ideas around from time to time. (obligatory shout out to Dameneon, Poetic, and Enyeez.) I have been involved with the FiveShards tournaments and would like to thank them for doing all they do to help grow the community.

G – How did you prepare for the second Constructed IQ tournament and how will you prepare for the 100k tournament?

K – Well, I would like to say that I tested and tested for weeks but the truth is that I threw my deck together the night before the tournament and didn’t even play a single game with it prior to the IQ. I haven’t had Eye of Creation in a deck since before it was nerfed long ago. I’ll put in a little more effort for the 100k tournament, I promise!

G – Did the past IQ affect the way you built your deck or how you played certain match-ups?

K – For sure, I expected quite a bit of Azurecannon so I made sure to have 4 Burn in the reserves. Funktion’s deck from the week before was what I mostly based my list on. My secret strategy was to draw and play Arborean Rootfather. Shocking, I know.

G – What are your thoughts on the current meta of the game and the different archetypes ?

K – I do feel RW ramp is the strongest deck solely because of Arborean Rootfather with damage gem. Azurecannnon and Mono Blood being not too far behind. I did play against more SW than I expected and ended up playing against zero aggro decks.

G – Did you do anything different during the top 8 of the event?

K – Nope. Just tried to continue playing optimally.

G – What was the hardest match that you have faced during the IQ?

K – Besides being blown out one match against Azurecannon, the other tough match was in the last round against the undefeated ThugTown’s MonoB. He had a great start and for a moment I wasn’t sure I would win and make the top 8.

G – Do you have advice for players looking to get qualified in the next constructed or sealed IQ tournament?

K – Just to play in as many IQs as possible. Give yourself as many chances as you can to win.

G –  Can fellow Hexers find you playing somewhere? (e.g. if you have a twitch, if you post often on forum or something)

K – I do not stream, but you can probably find me lurking in chat in various Twitch Hex streams. If anyone does want to message me for whatever reason, my IGN is Koma. See you guys in February!

G – Thank you Koma and best of luck in the 100k Tournament!
